How to Start a Tutoring Business in NZ (From Someone Who Did It)

9 October 2026 · by Jean McKenzie

Every few weeks I get an email from a teacher, a teacher aide, or a homeschooling parent asking the same question: how do I start a tutoring business in NZ?

I love these emails. I started Impact Tutoring more than 12 years ago as one tutor in Te Awamutu, so I know exactly where you're standing right now, somewhere between wanting to start your own tutoring business and working out how to set up a tutoring business properly. Here's the honest version of what it takes.

First, the good news

Tutoring is one of the few businesses you can start with skills you already have. If you can help a child understand fractions, or coach a Year 11 student through their NCEA maths externals, you already have the product. Demand is real and growing. Parents all over New Zealand are searching for help with NCEA, with the new maths and literacy co-requisites (CAA), and with the basics that some children just need more time on.

And the need isn't only in the big cities. Some of the strongest demand we see comes from regional New Zealand, where in many towns there's no dedicated tutoring service at all.

What you actually need when setting up a tutoring business

  1. Decide who you serve. Primary numeracy and literacy? NCEA maths? Adult learners going back to study? You can't be everything on day one. Pick the students you're best equipped to help and build from there. Your focus is then on building your team of tutors.
  2. Set up the business basics. An NZBN, a bank account, a decision on structure. We give franchisees an extensive "Starting your business" manual that walks through all of it, so you're not guessing your way through the paperwork.
  3. Find your first students. Your local school community, word of mouth, a Google Business Profile, and your website will do more than any advertising in the early days. Your first ten families become your sales team if you do great work.
  4. We have your systems ready. Bookings, invoicing, session notes, parent updates, resources for every level you teach. This is the invisible 60% of a tutoring business.

Start with our proven model. This is what our franchise Hubs do. When Anna opened our Far North Hub, she started with the assessment tools, the teaching resources, the systems, the online courses to offer alongside sessions, and a brand behind her, plus me on the end of the phone. She spent her energy on students and her community, not on reinventing the machinery. And because there's no lease to sign or classroom to fit out, stepping into that model stays low-cost too. You're paying for years of groundwork already done, not for a shop front.

Are you a teacher, a passionate educator, or someone who wants to build a business with purpose? If you're thinking about making the leap, do it. New Zealand needs more of you, in more towns.
